80. The Field - Fron Here We Go Sublime (2007)

The Field is Stockholm, Sweden native, Axel Willner. Following some remix work for Swedish pop/techno artists, The Field signed to German techno label Kompact, run by Willners hero Wolfgang Voight (GAS). Kompact were a suitable choice as the label who brought fun, feeling and a pop sensibility back into a po-faced techno (Tresor) Europe. From Here We Go Sublime expanded on the inclusiveness of Kompacts style by appealing to indie listeners by richening the techno/trance with chopped vocal samples (from Kate Bush, The Four Tops, Lionel Ritchie and The Flamingos), a midrangy production reminiscent of the shoegaze of Seefeel or Slowdive, and the heavy bass and treble signifier of club based dance music reduced in the mix to hazy thumps and swirling gaseous membranes, reminiscent of err...GAS
The outstanding track on this album (and one of 2007's) is the final track From Here We Go Sublime, here The Field creates a truly psychedelic electronic masterpiece using samples from The Flamingos - I Only Have Eyes For You, however fans of the original (who isn't?) will know the 1950's production was already so far out, The Field need do little more than chop and loop, the epic reverb and echo of the source do the rest.

81. Pole - Pole 3 (2000)

Pole is German electronic producer Stefan Betke, and so the story goes, he dropped a Waldorf 4-Pole filter and amazed by the ensuing glitches, clicks and pops the filter made, not only created his 1,2,3 album triptych based on the sound, but also chose Pole as his moniker. Along with Basic Channel, Pole created a dub electronica with the tools of techno. Pole's music is immersive with endless tiny detail whilst somehow remaining minimal and functional. Time is suspended and spaces are opened within Poles expansive and addictive dub universe.
Pole 3 is now best heard as part of the 2009 CD reissue of Pole 1,2 & 3. Three hours can easily slip away in the techno dub hole.

82. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca (2009)

Brooklynites, Dirty Projectors 7th and best album came out last year, and with the backing of Domino records matched the big label support with an ambitious forward looking pop masterpiece. Experimental pop songwriting, remenisent of Joni, Prince, Scritti, Kate Bush, Associates and Bjork without being overly retro (it's that good), this album stands alongside modern wares from A. Collective, V. Weekend and The Books, not to mention rhythms cribbed from modern R&B. Unafraid of overreached romantic vocals, orchestra, keyboards, choral backing, sentimentality or pretention (I am a big supporter of pretention in pop) and including great moments such as one of the three best singles of 09 in Stillness Is The Move and the mid 80's Prince drum fills on Florescent Half Dome.
